Famous Brides: Jacqueline Kennedy

  • Star brides

First ladies are not made, they are born. Jacqueline Kennedy, nee Lee Bouvier, was not only a lady, but also an aristocrat. She was born in a family with French roots and got an excellent education. She learned the sense of harmony at university, having received a bachelor’s degree in French literature.
She became world famous when she married future US President John F. Kennedy. Their wedding was on September 12, 1953. Jacqueline’s dress was created by designer Ann Lowe, whose customers were the Roosevelts, the Bouvier family and the rest of the New York aristocracy. The dress was made of 50 m ivory silk taffeta, it had a long full flounced skirt, off shoulder sleeves and a close-fitting bodice. It was a classic wedding gown in those years. It differed from an ordinary outfit in that Jacqueline Kennedy was wearing a lace veil, which belonged to her grandmother, and there was a family pearl necklace on her neck. She also put on the gift of her future husband – a diamond bracelet that she got the day before. The bouquet consisted of white and pink gardenias and orchids.
After the death of the President of the United States, Jacqueline Kennedy re-married to the Greek millionaire Aristotle Onassis. It was already 1968, the fashion as well as circumstances of that time changed. Only 22 guests attended the wedding, the ceremony was held on a small private island called Skorpios. Jacqueline was wearing a milky lace dress by Valentino, who had been dressing her since 1964. The dress had long sleeves with cuffs and a short pleated skirt. Jacqueline’s hair was embellished with a bow, which was the element of her “personal style”. Aristotle Onassis gave the bride an engagement ring with diamonds of 40 carats, which is considered to be one of the most expensive in the world.
Jacqueline’s style became the benchmark for many women. She knew how to look elegant, paying attention to details and recognizable elements: long gloves, big glasses, bows and, of course, pearls.
